Magento Catalog Category Search

Catalog Category Search Backend

The ISAAC Catalog Category Search extension allows users to search within a category or subcategory, by adding a drop-down list to the quick search bar. As an aid to the user, the active category is automatically selected in the drop-down list.

The quick search bar is extended with a drop-down list containing the main categories and optionally its subcategories. After selecting a category, entering the search query, and pressing the search button (or enter), the search result page is shown for the search query where the results are filtered by the selected category. On this page and on category pages, the active category (filter or current category) is also selected in the drop-down list to avoid the extra selection step.

The following options can be configured:

  • Select categories on category pages (default ‘yes’): indicates if the active category on a category page is automatically selected in the drop-down list. The active category is determined by the active category filter and, as a fallback by the current category).
  • Show subcategories (default ‘yes’): indicates whether subcategories should be displayed in the category drop-down list.
  • Subcategory indentation (default ‘’): the indentation text that is shown in front of each subcategory in the category drop-down list.

Translations include English and Dutch.

Hi Isaac... Does this extension implement the normal SEARCH, or ADVANCED SEARCH in the background? The reason I ask is that we hacked-in something similar at, and it relys on the Advanced. This then kills all of the QuickSearch attributes and URL Redirects. Hoping yours is a fix for us on this! Cheers, Todd

  • Todd 29-05-2011 - 15:10

The answer is YES, it does use normal search. I've got this running at Removed the CSS, and retagged some of the PHTML, and it dropped perfectly into my page. Now all my URL Rewrites and attribute searches are back. Whoop!!

<p>Hi Todd, I'm glad to hear that you find the plugin useful. I hope it will make you a millionaire :)</p>

What a great extension !! After a few tweaks, it worked great. All categories however yields a "no results" for me with the word "couch", while Furniture with "couch" yields 2 items. Any ideas? I´m using a custom theme and had to use the base catalogcategorysearch.xml not sure what it could be.

  • Aad 30-08-2011 - 13:47

Hi Marco, I'm glad you like the extension. Regarding your question, the extension does not change the actual implementation of the search functionality, it merely adds a category filter to the search url. So I suspect it has something to do with the search index. Could you try to refresh this index? If that doesn't help, could you please supply the URL for which no results are shown? Aad

  • George 18-03-2012 - 23:58

Hi there, this looks just to be what I need for our big (20k products) Magento store with lots of sub and subsub categories. I can't get it to show up though on Magento No changes seen in frontend or backend, even when I copy files and folders that might miss in custom theme. I currently use a bit of code to add a sort like function, but that lacks sub categories support. See: That bit of code was put in I also tried to go back to original on that: nothing. Any suggestions?

This is a great plugin! Works perfectly. One question, is there a way to disable the category sidebar when no results are displayed. I noticed if there are no results the sidebar is different for "all categories" versus choosing a category. Trying to keep it consistent. Thanks again for a great plugin.

  • Aad 03-08-2012 - 18:55

Hi Ryan, Great you like the plugin! Also thanks for your suggestion to disable the category sidebar when no results are displayed. For this to work transparently for the user, I think the following additional functionalities are required: (1) Search results need to be updated for the search query without the category filter: it could be the case that there are results corresponding to the query without the category filter, but none for the query with the category filter. (2) It should also be made clear to the user that the search within the selected category did not return any results, and that results for all categories are shown instead. I think this could be a really nice addition to the plugin (which could be turned on and off via the admin interface).
